When you remember that training and being physically active is for your own self care, not an obligation you owe to anyone else or a chore that you “have” to do, it lets you decide what activities would be safest, most enjoyable and most effective for the things that are most important to you (and decide how much time you want to allocate to training given all the other things in life that are important to you).
For me, what’s important right now in terms of training is keeping my lungs functioning well (I have asthma), keeping my hips stable and supported (I have some hip issues), being fit enough to enjoy more rounds of boxing, feeling powerful and strong, having fun and keeping on top of my mental health (regular exercise helps me with this).
I use those things to select my activities through the week. My priorities and interests (and available time and energy) change fairly regularly and that’s fine – I just adjust my training accordingly.
If you haven’t checked in with yourself in a while to figure out what you’re wanting to get out of your training, it’s worth setting aside a little time to think it through and notice whether that’s lining up with the physical activity you’re doing at the moment.
